What published reviews found

Tom's Hardware titled its review "The Lateral Pass" and explained why: at 1440p it found very little rasterization difference between the RX 7800 XT and the RX 6800 XT it effectively replaced. Against the RTX 4070 it measured about 7% more rasterization performance, while NVIDIA led in ray tracing by 27%.

Other outlets saw a different gap with the RTX 4070. Dexerto had the RX 7800 XT about 5% behind the RTX 4070 at 1440p without upscaling, and about 13% ahead of the RX 6800 XT. WePC placed it 8% to 15% behind the newer RTX 4070 Super, while PCGamesN's Sapphire Nitro+ review said it beat the RTX 4070 in rasterized games and lost clearly in ray tracing. The spread suggests the two cards are close in rasterization and that results depend on the game mix.

Power and thermals came up in several reviews. Guru3D described the 263W rating as roughly 30% above the RTX 4070's power use. PCGamesN said the 263W reference rating was lower than the RX 6800 XT's 300W, and it measured 65C under load on the Sapphire Nitro+, a partner model rated at 288W. Trusted Reviews recorded 84.4C on the GPU and 106C at the hotspot on its sample, and it reported 55fps average at 4K across seven games versus 51.86fps for the RTX 4070.

Ray tracing was the recurring weakness. Trusted Reviews, PCGamesN, Dexerto and Tom's Hardware all found the card behind NVIDIA there. TechSpot's product page averages 83 out of 100 across 12 reviews and lists the 16GB of memory and value against the RTX 4070 as strengths.

Price and availability

The launch price was $499, about $100 below the RTX 4070's $599. AMD's newer RDNA 4 cards followed in March 2025, with the RX 9070 at $549 and the RX 9070 XT at $599 (Windows Central).

Current prices disagree widely between trackers. TechSpot showed $895 on October 6, 2026, with a 12-month range of $519 to $895. GPUDeals listed $495 on eBay and $540 on Amazon the same day. Videocardprices.com showed $599.99 on Amazon and a used listing at $449.99 on July 14, 2026. Compare several retailers before buying.

Who it's for

The RX 7800 XT suits a 1440p build that prioritizes rasterization performance and VRAM and does not lean on ray tracing. The extra 4GB over the RTX 4070 gives more room for texture-heavy games. Our RTX 4070 vs RX 7800 XT comparison walks through the trade-off, and the RTX 4070 guide covers the NVIDIA side.

Skip it at the higher tracker prices, or if you want strong ray tracing or a lower-power card. At those prices the newer RX 9070 XT deserves a look, and the best GPU deals page lists current offers.

Bottom line

The published reviews describe the RX 7800 XT as a solid 1440p card with generous VRAM and a lower launch price than the RTX 4070, held back by weak ray tracing and little progress over the RX 6800 XT. Whether it is a good buy now depends almost entirely on price. At the lower prices seen on some trackers it remains attractive; near $895 it is not.
