What published reviews found

TechRadar called the RTX 4060 the best 1080p option under $300 when it launched. It recorded a synthetic score about 20% above the RTX 3060's and found ray tracing results ahead of both the RTX 3060 and AMD's RX 7600. PCGamesN reported average frame rates of 60fps or higher in most of its 1080p suite, and it cleared 30fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at the RT Ultra preset without DLSS.

HotHardware highlighted cool and quiet operation, a mainstream card size and an efficient design. TechSpot's product page summarizes its own conclusions the same way: strong efficiency and 1080p performance, and DLSS 3 as a useful feature in the games that support it. PCGamesN saw Frame Generation roughly double minimum and average frame rates in F1 22, though it noted the benefit shrinks at higher resolutions.

The criticisms are consistent across outlets. The 8GB frame buffer is the most common one: HotHardware pointed out that the RTX 3060 it replaced carries 12GB on a 192-bit bus, and PCGamesN saw stuttering in A Plague Tale: Requiem with ray tracing maxed, saying the 8GB and 128-bit bus fill up quickly even at 1080p. TechRadar noted that without upscaling the gain over the RTX 3060 is modest, and TechSpot described the generational improvement as minimal and the card as weak at higher resolutions.

Value was the other sticking point. TechRadar said the RX 7600 is the better pure-value pick for buyers who do not care about ray tracing, and PCGamesN called $299 a hard sell because the RX 7600 cost $30 less and was faster in rasterization at the time.

Price and availability

The launch price was $299. NVIDIA's RTX 5060, which Guru3D lists at an MSRP of about $299 with 8GB of GDDR7 and 3,840 CUDA cores, has since arrived as the newer card at the same tier. A January 2025 Notebookcheck report, based on dealer information rather than an NVIDIA statement, said the RTX 4060 was expected to stay available longer than the RTX 4070 until its replacement shipped.

Street pricing has moved a lot. TechSpot's price tracker showed $546 on October 6, 2026, with a 12-month range of $399 to $579. Price-tracking site videocardprices.com listed a new Gigabyte model at $427.41 and used cards at $249.99 on July 14, 2026. Check current listings before you buy, because prices change often.

Who it's for

The RTX 4060 suits a 1080p build that needs low power draw and a small footprint, or an older PC with a modest power supply and a free 8-pin connector. Our budget gaming PC build guide covers the rest of such a system.

Skip it if you plan to move to 1440p or want to keep a card for many years of heavy new releases, since the reviews above point to the 8GB limit as the first thing to age. The RTX 4070 is the step up with 12GB, the RX 7600 was the cheaper raster-focused rival at launch, and the RTX 5060 is worth comparing if prices are close. See the best GPU deals page for current offers.

Bottom line

The RTX 4060 is an efficient, quiet 1080p card with good ray tracing and DLSS 3 support for its class, and the published reviews agree on that. They also agree that 8GB of VRAM and a modest gain over the RTX 3060 limit it. At $299 it was a fair option; at the higher street prices seen in late 2026, a used card or the newer RTX 5060 may be worth comparing.

Pros

  • Strong 1080p performance for its class in published reviews
  • Low 115W power draw and cool, quiet operation noted by HotHardware
  • DLSS 3 Frame Generation can sharply lift frame rates in supported games
  • Ray tracing results ahead of the RX 7600 in TechRadar's comparison

Cons

  • 8GB of VRAM is flagged as a limitation by TechSpot, PCGamesN and HotHardware
