Epic Games shipped the v42.20 update for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 on September 17, marking the season's second major Override patch and its biggest crossover push yet. The update centers on a new Kingdom Hearts collaboration, adds seven new Match Override cartridges, and builds on the Sprite mastery system introduced in the prior v42.10 patch. If you're brand new to the game, our Fortnite beginner's guide covers the basics before diving into this season's collabs.

Sora and the Keyblade join the fight

The headline addition is a Kingdom Hearts collaboration featuring Sora, who arrives with the Keyblade as a new mythic melee-and-ranged hybrid weapon. It's Epic's latest crossover push under the Chapter 7 Season 4 "Override" theme, which has leaned hard into other games and franchises rather than films or music acts this season — Sora joins Sonic, Mega Man, and Persona 5's Joker as playable additions.

Seven new Match Overrides, with more on the way

v42.20 adds seven Match Override cartridges players can toggle into a game: Crash Bandicoot, Recovery, Level Up, Dynamic Storm, Super Shot, Big Boom, and Healing Overdrive. Two more — Suppressing Fire and Health Siphon — are scheduled to arrive September 24, continuing the toggleable modifier system Epic introduced with v42.10's Prop Hunt and Big Head mode overrides.

New Sprites, loot, and a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners weapon

Three new Sprites launched with the update — Crash Bandicoot, Pond, and Blinky — with a Birthday Sprite following on September 26. Mastering a Sprite now halves the Sprite Dust needed to summon it again, and players who extract 30 Sprites unlock a free Pixel Sprite Trainer back bling. On the loot side, the update adds Sea Salt Ice Cream as a new healing item and Rebecca's Guns, a weapon tied to a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collaboration.

What v42.20 adds, at a glance:

  • Kingdom Hearts collab — Sora joins as a mythic weapon wielder with the Keyblade.
  • Seven Match Overrides — Crash Bandicoot, Recovery, Level Up, Dynamic Storm, Super Shot, Big Boom, and Healing Overdrive, with two more landing September 24.
  • Three new Sprites — Crash Bandicoot, Pond, and Blinky, plus a Birthday Sprite on September 26.
  • New loot — Sea Salt Ice Cream and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners-themed Rebecca's Guns.
  • Tetris Tower — a new mid-match objective that appears around the 10-minute mark.

Why it matters

v42.20 shows Epic sticking with the toggleable Override Hack system it introduced in v42.10 rather than resetting it each patch, while stacking in a second wave of crossover content on top of Sora's arrival. For players who checked out after Chapter 7 Season 4 launched in August, this is the update that makes the season feel meaningfully different from week one — between the new collabs, the maturing Sprite mastery system, and the OG Season X throwback still running in parallel through December 4, there's more reason to log back in now than there was even a few weeks ago.
