Quick answer: AION 2 launches globally with eight classes: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric and Chanter. Most published guides point new players toward the Gladiator or the Ranger for a smooth start, while the Templar and Cleric are praised for group play but demand more responsibility. The Assassin is the class guides most often warn beginners about.
This guide is compiled from published class guides and press coverage. GameRath did not play or test the classes ourselves, and the sources do not always agree, so we point out the disagreements below.
AION 2 is NCSoft's free-to-play MMORPG sequel, and its global PC launch date was October 5, 2026 (see our AION 2 release date article for the launch details). Your first big decision is the class, so it is worth understanding what each one asks of you before you spend hours leveling it.
The eight launch classes at a glance
Guides describe the classes in broadly the same way, with minor differences in wording and a few naming quirks (see the note further down).
- Gladiator: a melee fighter built around a greatsword and wide-area attacks. Guides call it a tough frontline damage dealer with some off-tank ability, but not a dedicated tank.
- Templar: the main tank, using a longsword and shield to hold enemy attention and soak damage. Guides stress that it is in demand for group content and rewards knowing boss mechanics.
- Assassin: a dagger-wielding melee class focused on stealth, mobility and burst damage against single targets. It is described as high-skill and punishing when you stand still.
- Ranger: a bow user dealing physical damage from range with strong mobility. Guides say distance gives beginners a safety margin.
- Sorcerer: a spellbook caster focused on heavy burst and area magic damage. It has low defense, so it depends on keeping its distance.
- Spiritmaster: an orb-wielding summoner who uses elemental spirits to deal damage over time and control the battlefield.
- Cleric: the primary healer, using a mace. Guides say it is always wanted in groups and has enough damage to level solo.
- Chanter: a staff-wielding support hybrid that fights in melee while buffing allies and providing secondary healing.
A note on names: some outlets use a different name for the magic classes. MetaBot, for example, says the global client calls the summoner class Spiritmaster, while the name Elementalist is used internally and in some Korean and Taiwanese English guides. Another outlet, Mein-MMO, lists the two magic classes as Wizard and Summoner. If you are cross-checking guides, expect this mismatch.
A ninth class, the Brawler, exists in the Korean and Taiwanese versions according to Mein-MMO and How To Video Game, but it had not reached the global release at the time of writing.
Which classes do guides recommend for beginners?
The advice is not unanimous, which is itself useful information:
- Gladiator is the most frequently recommended starting class. Mein-MMO rates it highly for newcomers, Aion Strategies calls it a sensible starting point, and How To Video Game notes that it appears often in beginner advice.
- Ranger is recommended by Aion Strategies, TimeSaver and NoPing's solo-leveling advice, mostly because ranged damage lets you learn encounters at a safe distance.
- Templar and Cleric split opinion. Mein-MMO and NoPing call them beginner-friendly for learning core mechanics, while Aion Strategies and TimeSaver suggest them as a second character or for players who already enjoy tanking or healing, because mistakes affect the whole group.
- Chanter and Sorcerer are called beginner-friendly by TimeSaver, but Aion Strategies and How To Video Game rate the Sorcerer as demanding because of its low defense.
- Assassin is the class guides warn about most, with Mein-MMO and Aion Strategies advising newcomers to avoid it as a first character.
If you want a simple rule, pick the class whose combat style you enjoy watching, then check that it is not one of the high-difficulty options listed above.
Best class by playstyle
Solo leveling. Guides repeatedly mention the Ranger, Gladiator and Cleric as comfortable solo. The Spiritmaster is described by Aion Strategies as optimized for solo play, and TimeSaver says the Chanter is self-sufficient for questing.
Groups and dungeons. The Templar and Cleric are the classic in-demand roles, so players in these classes are described as rarely waiting for a party. The Chanter is called welcome in almost any group because of its buffs. The Gladiator, Ranger and Sorcerer fill damage slots.
PvP. The sources we read say less about PvP. Aion Strategies calls the Assassin excellent for PvP-focused players and says the Spiritmaster can be difficult to fight against. Treat this as a starting point rather than a tier list, and check recent patch notes and balance discussions before committing.
How to choose without regretting it
Think about the job you want in a group, then about how forgiving you want the first 20 hours to be. Pick a Gladiator or Ranger if you want straightforward combat with a safety margin. Pick a Templar or Cleric if you already like carrying a role in a group and are ready to learn boss mechanics. Pick a Chanter if you cannot decide, since guides describe it as flexible. Pick an Assassin or Sorcerer only if you enjoy high-skill, positioning-heavy play.
Class guides can age quickly in a live MMORPG. Balance changes can shift which classes are strongest, and the sources above were published around launch. Check the official patch notes before you commit to a long leveling run. A class that is slightly weaker on paper but that you enjoy will usually serve you better than one you dislike playing.
AION 2 is also a large open-world game, so a stable PC matters during busy launch days. If your rig is struggling, our budget gaming PC build guide covers affordable upgrade options.
