AION 2, NCSoft's follow-up to its 2008 flight-combat MMORPG, launched worldwide on October 5, 2026 at 13:00 UTC, after a paid Early Access window that ran from September 30 to October 4. The game is free-to-play on PC. Press reports in the first days after launch point to a large player count, a mixed set of Steam reviews, and a lively debate about its monetization. Figures below come from published reports as of October 7, 2026 and may change.
What AION 2 Is
AION 2 is an open-world MMORPG built on Unreal Engine 5 that centers its combat and exploration on flight and verticality, an evolution of the original Aion's wing-based traversal. NCSoft has said the world is roughly 36 times larger than the original Aion's and includes more than 200 dungeons across solo, four-player and eight-player formats, alongside the large-scale faction warfare the series is known for. If you are choosing a character, our AION 2 classes guide compares the eight launch classes.
Release Date, Early Access and Platforms
The rollout followed three stages. A free Launch Scale Test ran September 17–18. Paid Early Access then ran September 30 through October 4 for buyers of one of three Founder's Pack tiers, listed by Insider Gaming at $24.99 (Standard), $49.99 (Deluxe) and $99.99 (Ultimate). The full free-to-play global launch followed on October 5.
At launch AION 2 is PC-only, playable through Steam or NCSoft's own PURPLE launcher. A console version has been confirmed to be in development, but NCSoft has not announced a platform lineup or a date.
How Launch Went
The Elec reported that the game passed 400,000 peak concurrent players worldwide on its first day of full release, with Steam alone reaching 397,905. It described that as roughly 2.3 times the peak during paid Early Access. MassivelyOP reported that NCSoft opened multiple new servers to handle the crowds, mostly in the EU region.
Reception is mixed. MassivelyOP described Steam user reviews as "mixed" at that point, with players praising gameplay and visuals and criticizing simple combat and auto-movement. The Elec's summary of player feedback highlighted smooth-feeling combat, Unreal Engine 5 lighting and environments, and flight-based exploration.
Is AION 2 Actually Free to Play?
Yes, the base game requires no purchase to download or play. NCSoft's monetization plan, as reported by MassivelyOP in July, pairs the free game with an optional $15-per-month subscription, per-character "Daeva" battle passes with free and premium tracks, a cash shop focused on cosmetics and consumables, and Founder's Packs. NCSoft said cash-shop items do not affect gear progression or long-term power, and noted that some details could change.
Since launch, complaints have focused on how that plan works in practice. Players cited by The Elec and MassivelyOP object to a membership being required for marketplace access and currency exchange, to membership benefits applying only to the server where they were purchased, to battle passes being bought per character, and to paying for cosmetic dyes. Whether these change will depend on NCSoft's response, so check the current in-game shop before spending.
Should You Jump In Now?
If you want an Unreal Engine 5 MMORPG with flight combat and do not mind a monetization system that some players dislike, the free download costs nothing to try. If trading and the market matter to you, read the latest membership details first, since reports say those features are tied to the subscription. An MMORPG built around large open zones also rewards a PC that is not bottlenecked, and our budget gaming PC build guide is a reasonable starting point if you are upgrading for it.
For players comparing AION 2 with other live-service games, it is also worth sizing it up against something like Genshin Impact, a very different genre but the same question of whether a new live-service world deserves your ongoing time.
