NVIDIA's DLSS 5 is now available, and its first game is NBA 2K27. The company describes the new technology as "3D-Guided Neural Rendering," and it is limited to GeForce RTX 50-series hardware and GeForce NOW at launch.
What DLSS 5 actually does
According to NVIDIA, DLSS 5 uses AI to add the lighting and material detail that real-time performance limits usually force developers to trim. In NBA 2K27, the company's examples focus on how light passes through skin and ears and catches hair, while keeping the facial geometry scanned from real players intact. The technique is built on top of the frame the game engine already renders, rather than inventing a frame from scratch.
That makes it a different kind of feature from earlier DLSS releases, which were mostly about running a game faster at a given resolution. DLSS 5 is about making the image look better at the same speed, and NVIDIA quotes very high frame rates for NBA 2K27 with it enabled on its RTX 50-series cards.
Who can use it
At launch, DLSS 5 works on:
- GeForce RTX 50-series desktop GPUs and laptops
- GeForce NOW Ultimate, streamed from NVIDIA's RTX 5080-based cloud rigs
NVIDIA lists Game Ready Driver 616.64 as the driver release that brought DLSS 5 support in NBA 2K27, so update before you go looking for the option.
What it means for you
If you own an RTX 40-series card such as the RTX 4070, DLSS 5 is not available to you today, and NVIDIA has not said otherwise in the material we reviewed. Older cards keep the existing DLSS features. If you're weighing an upgrade, our RTX 4070 vs RX 7800 XT comparison covers where the previous generation still makes sense on price, and our budget gaming PC build shows what a balanced setup looks like.
The quick summary:
- Launch title — NBA 2K27 is the only game confirmed for day one.
- Hardware — RTX 50-series GPUs and laptops, plus GeForce NOW Ultimate.
- Driver — Game Ready Driver 616.64 or newer.
- Older cards — no DLSS 5 support announced.
Why it matters
A single-game launch on a single GPU generation is a cautious start. Whether DLSS 5 becomes a feature worth buying hardware for depends on how many more games adopt it, and NVIDIA has not committed to a full list. We'll update this story as more titles are announced.
