Gaijin Entertainment released the "Sky Odyssey" major update for War Thunder on September 16. It's a large content drop: new vehicles across every branch, a new ground map, a bomber damage-model overhaul, and changes to how abandoned vehicles are rewarded. If you're new to the game, start with our War Thunder beginner's guide.
Greek vehicles and new ground forces
The headline addition is a group of Greek-operated aircraft and tanks, which the update slots into other nations' trees. Among the aircraft are Greek variants of the F-102A, F-86E(M), Mirage F1CG, F-4E AUP, Mirage 2000-5EG and Rafale EG. On the ground, the update adds vehicles such as India's Arjun Mk 1 in the British tree, Indonesia's Harimau light tank for Japan, and the Leopard 2HEL, among others. The full list also spans helicopters and ships, including the AW159 HMA.2 and HMS Lion for Britain, and the USS Mahan for the US.
Darwin Hill and new modes
Ground Battles get a new map, Darwin Hill, set in the Falkland Islands around the settlement of Darwin. Separately, three modes that had been running as limited-time events, Nuclear Escalation, Naval Enduring Confrontation and Bullet Hell, are now permanent and can be picked from the "To Battle!" dropdown.
Bombers, rewards and interface
Gaijin reworked bomber survivability with fixed bugs, adjusted damage accumulation and recalculated hit zones, with different settings for different engine types. When a player abandons a vehicle, the kill is now credited to the nearest enemy for half the standard rewards, within 3 km for ground vehicles and 20 km for ships.
Quality-of-life changes include a redesigned preset menu with the limit raised from 18 to 25, and a choice of War Thunder, NATO or USSR-style historical map markers.
What Sky Odyssey adds, at a glance:
- Greek-origin vehicles — aircraft, tanks, helicopters and ships added across several nations.
- Darwin Hill — a new Falklands ground map.
- Permanent modes — Nuclear Escalation, Naval Enduring Confrontation and Bullet Hell.
- Bomber overhaul — reworked damage model and hit zones.
- Abandonment rule — half rewards to the nearest enemy.
Why it matters
Permanent modes and a survivability pass on bombers are the changes most players will feel every session, more so than any single new vehicle. Smaller follow-up patches have landed since September 16, so expect balance tweaks over the next few weeks.
